A Reflection describing my experience in my Math class this year.
Birthday Fibonacci sequence
Before the Birthday Fibonacci sequence, the Math class was learning about the different sequence families. We also learned about Arithmetic sequence which is adding by a constant rate to get the next term in the sequence. Geometric sequences is multiplying by a constant rate to get the next term. While the Fibonacci sequence is adding the two previous terms together to get the next term in the sequence. For this project, you were supposed to take your birth day and month and have them be your first two terms. Then add those two terms together to get the next term in the next sequence.
Next, you repeat this pattern until you produce 15 terms; take your previous term divide it by your present term to create a ratio. Two artifacts from this assignment that shows my growth is the first draft that was made in class, and then the final draft which I wrote the sequence in pen. The first draft was dirty and full of eraser marks because I didn’t understand you had to add two terms together to get the next term in a Fibonacci sequence, unlike my final draft was clear and was written nicely in pen; and I finally understood how a Fibonacci sequence worked and I didn’t make so many mistakes. My biggest challenge in this process was to keep up with the terms I already added together. I was challenged here because I wanted to make sure I generated the right term. I overcame this challenge by putting my finger on the term I just added, so now I know that the sum of those two terms is the next term. A successful moment during this process is when I wrote my Birthday sequence in pen, yet it was nice and clear to read.
The biggest thing I learned from this assignment is how the Fibonacci sequence was discovered by a man studying how rabbits breed. The Fibonacci sequence is adding the previous term to the present term to get a sum. That sum is the next term in the sequence. Example: term one is 6 and term two is 6, so then you add both digits together to get term three which is 12. By completing this project, I can now identify different sequence families. As a student, I can use this skill for answering sequence based questions on a test. Also, Data Analysis may help in the future. For example, if I have to explain how a company’s stocks are growing or decreasing over time.
The quality that was demonstrated during this process is Inquiry. Inquiry is the ability to seek the answers for yourself or asking for help to a question instead of being stationary and thinking the answer is going to “magically” appear. Inquiry was shown when I sought for the teacher’s explanation of the Fibonacci sequence. I also sought my answer, by getting my teacher’s attention in class by raising my hand. This quality was enhanced, because I now know I must be willing to seek the answer for myself so I can better myself and my knowledge.
