At the Dayton Regional STEM School, we base off FIVE qualities, and they are:

Persistence: Is the ability to keep trying even though the task may be challenging. To truly show Persistence, you must do the work and not fall into the temptation of giving up. For example, the Healthy Living project in sophomore year required great persistence since we constantly had to change our presentation due to one group member not being present throughout most of the project. It provided challenges such as learning his part of the slides for the presentation, write his portion of the report, and covering his role during the event with the sixth graders. So no matter how difficult or challenging the work is, you must endure and face the obstacle head on.

Inquiry: Is the skill to analyze the given situation and seek a solution depending on your circumstances. Those circumstances and/or situations can be a problem on a worksheet, directions, or even a rubric. In addition, to the situations and circumstances problem solving with either yourself or group members can be very beneficial because you aid yourself or each other to get the answer that you seek. For instance, during the Probability Unit sophomore year, my group was told that are answer for the one question was right but not for the question after it. We had to go back and analyze the problem and situation and realized that you have to factor the gene traits again for the second child since the probability of the gene traits being passed does change with the next sibling. So  to fully show Inquiry, you have to be willing to pursue the answer for yourself.

Communication: Is when you talk in a manner of understanding; it is concise and to the point. As a student or employee, you want to clearly explain your thoughts, ideas, and wants. Also, you want to consider your group member's thoughts, and not be solely committed to your own. One project that relied heavily on communication was the Genetic Counseling project in Geometry class because we had many Plan-E days throughout this project. So my group and I had to discuss what things needed to be done on that day, so we won’t fall behind when class resumes the next day. For example, I had to simplify one of the probability charts while Rhyse, one of my group members, had to finish one of the diagrams needed for the presentation. Therefore, communication is clarifying your opinion in a way that addresses a specific audience in order to guide them to a particular goal.

Collaboration: Is the ability to work well with other people. While working with a group or a person, you want their ideas to produce a common solution for a common problem. To be a great group member, you want to combine your opinions with the group opinions. So the groups’ answer has reached its fullest potential. Example of collaboration, is when my debate group for “Was the 20th Century one of progress or decline” debates sophomore year had to work together to form our arguments in a cohesive manner, so we could properly defend our position and oppose the opposition’s argument with clear facts. And due to our ability to combine our ideas effectively, we were able to clearly defend our position and cause the judges to think really hard and well to determine which group truly won the debate. Basically, collaboration is displaying teamwork at its best.

Creativity: Is implementing your imagination to your everyday work. Creativity is when you come up with something that may be an original and that demonstrates your personality in a particular fashion. For instance, when we made the wired mobiles in Art I class freshman year. I decided to make metal clouds that caused the trees to become gray which it was supposed to represent the trees being blocked from the sunlight. But then I had the “sun”, gold metal triangle, shine down on the green tree in the middle which shows how this tree was exposed to the sun’s light. So if you properly show creativity, then you should be proud of something that nobody can replicate.
