A Reflection describing my experience in my Chinese class this year.
In Chinese, we were learning about how to say names of family members. Also writing or identify their job in Chinese. We had a test on the vocabulary for jobs and family members. You were supposed to count how many people in your family. Tell your family member’s job, and say what level of school your and\or your sibling attends. Write all this information down in Chinese Characters and in paragraph format. Vocab cards and drawing the family tree that has labels of your family members (in Chinese) are two artifacts that show growth through this process. The vocab cards only defined phrases and words for family like 家口人 (which means how many family members you have), 妈妈(mother), and 爸爸(father); rather than my paragraph had to fuse those certain words and phrases into a paragraph that made sense.
My biggest challenge throughout the project was I wanted to make sure that I clearly pronounced the sentence in Chinese. To overcome this challenge, I re- read my paragraph and practice saying the paragraph. Another succesful moment through this process, was my presentation of me reading my family tree in front of the class. The biggest thing through this project was I learned how to say when I grow up in Chinese. You pronounce it xiang dung and we had to use this phrase in our paragraph. By completing this project, I can now identify my family members and even their jobs in Chinese. This can help in the future because now I can communicate with a foreign person and the person and I can get to know eachother on a semi -personal level.
Out of the five Dayton Regional STEM School qualities, I mostly demonstrated Inquiry for this project. I would define Inquiry as the abilty to ask questions and seek answers for myself. For example, I used Inquiry when I asked my Chinese teacher questions about how to pronicate aunt and uncle in Chinese. I demonstrated Inquiry by asking the teacher questions about certain words and phrases I can use to describe my family in chinese. My ability is now enhanced because I know that I can ask a question or even use the Internet for explanation. Inquiry in this situation looked like; me raising my hand for an answer for pronunciation/ understanding Chinese vocab words. I define Inquiry as the ability to ask a question; while seeking for an answer to your problem or situation. If Inquiry wasn’t present in this process I would have trouble demonstrating Chinese in a clear and consice manner. I would not have been able to grow from defining phrases in vocabulary cards to making a paragraph; if it wasn’t for me seeking the answers to my evergrowing questions, Inquiry.
